Google edition adopts 'Palestine'

Internet giant Google has changed the tagline on the front page of its Palestinian edition from "Palestinian Territories" to "Palestine". 

It means the page www.google.ps now displays "Palestine" in Arabic under the main Google logo.

The terminology is a politically contentious issue, with the final status of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem yet to be agreed.

In November 2012 the UN upgraded Palestine's status in the world body.

Palestine, which was previously recognised at the UN as an "entity", became a "non-member observer state" - a step strongly opposed by Israel and the United States.

An earlier bid by the Palestinians to join the UN as a full member state in 2011 did not materialise because of a lack of support among the security council. 

Google has not yet commented on the change.

Multinational company says it is following the lead of the UN in renaming Palestinian Territories, Palestine [AFP] Internet search giant, Google, has recognised the Palestinians' upgraded UN status, placing the name "Palestine" on its search engine instead of "Palestinian Territories".

The domain name www.google.ps, Google's search engine for the territories, now brings up a homepage with "Palestine" written underneath the  Google logo. The move on Wednesday follows the UN nation decision last year to recognise Palestine as a "non-observer state".

"We're changing the name 'Palestinian Territories' to 'Palestine' across our products. We consult a number of sources and authorities when naming countries. In this case, we are following the lead of the UN ... and other internationa organisations," Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said.

The UN General Assembly in November upgraded Palestine to the status of non-member observer state by a vote of 138 votes in favour, nine against and 41 abstentions. Palestinian authorities have since begun to use the "State of Palestine" in diplomatic correspondence and issued official stamps for the purpose.

Israel however questioned the move, saying that it raised questions about the multinational company's involvement in international politics. "This change raises questions about the reasons behind this surprising involvement of what is basically a private internet company in international politics, and on the controversial side," Yigal Palmor, Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, told AFP news agency.  (Palestine Territories 라고 표기하는 게 더 정치적인 것 같은데? 유엔에서 공인한 명칭이 맞는거지.. 어불성설이다ㅡ.ㅡ)

구글이 그동안 팔레스타인이라고 표기하지 않았다는 걸 이제 알았다!!!! 그동안 그렇게 표기하지 않았다는 것은 뭐.. 구글도 미국기업이니까.. 놀랍지도 않다. 그런데 유엔에서 팔레스타인이 정식 국가로 인정된지 반년정도 되어가는데 이제와서 표기를 바꾼 건 무슨 의미일까?!
